BILL OF QUANTITIES

What is a Bill of Quantities?

A Bill of Quantities sometimes referred to as a Bills of Quantities, BQ or BOQ. It is an itemised cost outlay of all involved costs for construction of a project including material and labour to be used for a tender or to generate purchase orders for the supply of material or labour based on the itemised costing’s. It also details the terms and conditions of the construction or repair contract and itemises all work to enable a contractor to price the work for which he or she is bidding.

Bill of Quantities are prepared by quantity surveyors and building estimators by a process of “taking off” the cost of a building or other structures estimated from measurements or scaled from Structural Engineer’s drawings or Construction Plans. The format and content are based on the Australian Standard Methods of Measurement. If A Bill of Quantities is prepared in the correct format it can form part of a legally binding contract.
